Antionette Mhlanga: Orphan Care Officer

I work with orphans and other vulnerable children in the Bulawayo suburb of Sauerstown.

Over 100 children come to a kids club every Saturday between 1pm and 4pm. The age range can be as young as 2 years old and we have some who still come who are over 20 years old. The older you are, the more you are expected to help and lead!

By many methods we help children face challenges, overcome fears and learn life skills. We run up to 3 camps a year too, to complement the kids club work.

My work also involves visiting the homes of the children, allowing carers to talk freely about situations they face; to see how the project may be able to better assist and support the family and the child.

Education assistance is also an important part of what I do. The project pays school fees for children, and sometimes associated educational costs. I have to keep proper records, pay the school the fees etc, to ensure that both schools and donors are kept happy.

There are many skills that need to be deployed in my work, but being a good listener is essential to being a good orphan care officer.
